As a result of the interview with Dr. Haley, many questions have arisen in the Enevia community about intolerance to sulfur, sulfites, sulfur... how is it detected? what symptoms does it entail? etc, so we have decided to shed some light on this subject and make a simple but very useful article. Lets start by the beginning…
Sulfur, sulfate, sulfite or thiol?
Sulfate, sulfite, and sulfur are three chemicals with very different chemical and physical properties.
SULFUR It is a non-metallic element that is involved in the formation of different compounds.
On the contrary, SULFATE and SULFITE are oxyanions formed from the combination of sulfur and oxygen.
The Key Difference Between Sulfur, Sulfate, and Sulfite is that sulfur is an element, while sulfate and sulfite are sulfur bound to oxygen.
a thiol It is a compound that is made up of a sulfur atom bonded to a hydrogen atom.
So… what is thiol intolerance?
One of the jobs of the liver is to metabolize toxic molecules and convert them into less harmful forms through detoxification processes. There are 3 processes that require sulfur:
- glucuronidation
- Sulfation
- Glutathione-S-transferase (GST).
Sulfur is also converted to sulfate in your body to meet other needs.
Your body needs sulfur to form a thiol group and make cysteine.
Cysteine is used to produce: GLUTATHIÓN, an essential antioxidant essential in detoxification.
Glutathione function is essential for cellular protection from oxidative stress and damage, and for keeping the immune system strong.
A person who is thiol intolerant cannot tolerate, handle, or process large amounts of sulfur, especially in the form of thiol groups.
That person gets sick!
What are the symptoms of thiol intolerance?
- Skin problems (itching, rash, hives)
- Digestive problems (colic, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, excessive intestinal gas and bloating)
- eye redness
- Joint pains
- brain fog
- Headache
- Fatigue
Thiol Elimination Diet
Phase 1
Avoid all thiol-rich foods and supplements containing thiol groups for 7 days. The effects of your last use of thiol-containing substances wear off in seven days!
Phase 2
It begins ten days after the last ingestion of substances with a high thiol content. Introduce a large amount of high thiol foods into your system and continue to eat lots of them for a week. Watch carefully what you feel during the rapid and massive introduction of foods high in thiols into your system. If you experience the signs and symptoms of thiol intolerance right after the introduction, you do NOT need to continue for a full week.
We hope it has been helpful to you.
