The impact of nutrition on the recovery of neurological functions
«Doctors, parents of an apparently healthy girl, around 3 years old, we receive the first alerts from kindergarten: there are problems with motor skills, language, the level of neurological development.«
The pilgrimage begins
«We received care from child psychiatrists and neurologists, geneticists, speech therapists, psychologists, psychopedagogues, physiatrists, occupational therapists and the Emergency Department of the hospital where I worked at the time.
Without prior warning, my daughter has seizures; It is admitted and studied, metabolic and organic disorders are ruled out. (normal biochemical, genetic, CT and EEG tests), and a pharmacological treatment is installed: antiepileptics.
The seizure symptoms recur despite the therapy and it is then that a colleague whose only two children had neurological development disorders takes me to discover a world until then little known, appreciated and valued: The nutrition.
Nutrition as a fundamental factor
I confess that, with some skepticism, we began to change our eating habits, use of chemical products, house cleaning routines, water filter, etc. and, relatively quickly, we witnessed some small (or giants, for us parents) signs of progress:
- Better digestion
- Better sleep quality
- Best character
- Better attitude
- Greater attention
- Improvement in language
- Disappearance of seizures
- Among others.
With this evidence, together with my wife, also a doctor, we focused on studying nutrition and working on Majo's treatment. (my daughter) no longer only focused on drugs and sensory, psychopedagogical, speech therapy, psychological therapies, etc., but on the environment that surrounded her and the food that we prepared for her at home. We change customs, kitchen utensils and the type and way of preparing food.
We then rely on laboratory studies such as OAT, he hair metallogram and the complete stool examination; treatments such as antifungals, chelations and supplementation of vitamins, minerals and omega 3, and the results were visible.
As time went by, my daughter was able to continue her studies at school, she stopped taking anticonvulsants, and now, within her limitations, she is a happy person who sees a better future.
Our daughter's case showed us that, in cases of neurological dysfunction, intervention on the environment in which she develops (psychological and physical), mainly on nutrition and detoxification, is, undoubtedly, essential to advance in the recovery of your functions.
Since then, our professional practice has focused on the evaluation and medical-nutritional treatment of people with ASD, ADD, ADHD and concomitant pathologies.
We currently direct and work in our center NutraAutism in Tumbaco, Metropolitan District of Quito, Ecuador.«
– Dr. Judith Torres, Dr. Oscar Castro.
Majo's experience taught us that nutrition and environment play a crucial role in the treatment of autism and other neurological conditions.
