Genetic Consulting – Lorgen

Genetic counseling is a process in which a specialist geneticist (clinical geneticist or genetic counselor) provides information, support, and guidance to individuals and families affected by, or at risk of, genetic diseases and disorders.

Genetic consultations include the following steps:

  1. Medical and family history evaluation: The genetic specialist will review the patient's medical history and family history to identify possible patterns of inheritance and risk factors related to genetic diseases.
  2. Discussion of symptoms and concerns: The patient and the geneticist will discuss current symptoms and concerns, as well as the goals and expectations of the genetic consultation.
  3. Explanation of genetic concepts: The genetic specialist will explain basic concepts of genetics, such as genes, chromosomes and inheritance patterns, in a clear and understandable way for the patient and his family.
  4. Identification of relevant genetic tests: Depending on the symptoms, family history, and goals of the consultation, the genetic specialist will discuss and recommend specific genetic tests that may be helpful in the diagnosis, treatment, or risk assessment of genetic diseases.
  5. Interpretation of genetic results: If the patient has already undergone genetic testing, the genetic specialist will discuss and explain the results, including the identification of genetic mutations and their relationship to the patient's condition.
  6. Counseling and emotional support: The genetic specialist will provide emotional support and respond to the patient's and family's questions and concerns throughout the genetic consultation process.
  7. Planning and coordination of care: The genetic specialist will collaborate with the patient's medical team to develop an appropriate treatment and follow-up plan, taking into account the genetic information obtained during the consultation.
  8. Additional Resources and References: The genetic specialist can provide additional resources and referrals, such as support groups, health care services, and organizations related to specific genetic conditions.

 

Consultation duration: 45 minutes divided between the steps of the consultation.

Extra information of the queries: It is not necessary to have carried out previous tests with the laboratory, tests carried out in other laboratories can be taken to the consultation.
