Homocysteinuria MTHFR, Synlab (only with medical prescription)

Genetic test. Useful in evaluating the cause of elevated homocysteine levels; sometimes to assess the risk of thrombosis or premature cardiovascular disease (CVD). When to do the analysis? When there are elevated concentrations of homocysteine; on some occasions when a close relative has a MTHFR gene mutation or has developed premature CVD or thrombosis at a young age. Only a small percentage of cases with elevated homocysteine concentrations are due to hereditary causes. Among these, the MTHFR C677T and A1298C mutations are among the most frequent.

If a person has two copies of the mutated gene C677T for MTHFR (homozygous) with either one copy of the C677T gene and one copy of the A1298C gene, it is likely that elevated homocysteine levels are due to, or contribute to, these inherited mutations.

The presence of two copies of the MTHFR A1298C gene it is generally not associated with elevated homocysteine concentrations.
If the test result is negative, it means that the C677T and A1298C mutations were not detected, and the elevated homocysteine levels are likely due to other causes. Other, much less common, mutations of the MTHFR gene are not detected with the most commonly used test.

People with mutations in the MTHFR gene and other risk factors for thrombosis, such as Factor V Leiden or the PT 20210 mutation, may be at increased risk of thrombosis.
