In the last thirty years the neurodevelopmental disorders have occurred more and more frequently. Recently, the American Autism Society has reported that autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are the ones with the highest growth within the group, increasing at a rate of 10 to 17% per year according to their data.

This is explained, on the one hand, by advances in diagnosis and, on the other, due to the increase in environmental pollution and nutritional imbalances in the early stages of pregnancy, when the brain is in full development and is extremely vulnerable.

If environmental factors coexist with genetically determined innate vulnerabilities (by combinations of specific genetic variants), both in the mother and in the children, these environmental agents could be extremely damaging.

In most of the affected cases, these external factors at normally innocuous doses behave as very dangerous environmental neurotoxins, since they act on specific targets determined by the different genetic predispositions.

It is important to emphasize that in these especially vulnerable people, several studies have shown that prenatal exposure to certain environmental toxins, even at relatively low levels, is sufficient to have a significant impact on the permanent reduction of intellectual functions and cause behavioral disorders.
