Endotoxins are derived from the cell walls of Gram-negative bacteria (GNB). Gram-negative bacteria are found almost everywhere in nature. Its toxins are found within the membrane of the outer layer of the GNB cell wall. They do not have to be alive, so both viable and non-viable gram-negative bacteria provide endotoxins.
The most common routes of exposure to endotoxins are inhalation or absorption into the intestinal tract through food or water. The effect of endotoxins on health varies depending on the individual, the dose and the route of exposure.
Elevated air concentrations are prevalent in wastewater treatment plants, swine operations, cotton textile mills, chicken coops, and buildings damaged by water or contaminated by floods.
Endotoxin sample collection methods.
Powder samples: Collect the sample using the Swiffer cloth from the kit.
Keep the Swiffer cloth in a cool, dry place, sealed in its protective sleeve. Return the Swiffer cloth to the laboratory performing the analysis as quickly as possible, preferably within 24 hours of exposure.
The Swiffer cloth is provided sterile and can also be used to sample glycans.
